Tribute & Message From The Family

Erma Jean Harden Parks, 82, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at Clemson Downs in Clemson, SC.

Born in Athens, Georgia on December 14, 1938, Erma was raised in Watkinsville, Georgia. She was a daughter of the late Bernard A. and Carolyn Biggers Harden. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Leonard Parks, and her sister, Luanne Harden Hurst.

Erma graduated from Watkinsville High School in 1956. She obtained her bachelor's degree in 1960 from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia. She began her teaching career as a fourth-grade teacher in the Jefferson City Schools, Jefferson, Georgia. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Leonard. After an extended courtship, they were engaged and set their wedding date for July 31, 1965. It turned out to be the hottest day on record. The un-airconditioned Watkinsville First Christian Church sanctuary was so hot the candles melted.

On May 20, 1969, Erma and Leonard became the proud parents of their very special daughter, Mary Kate. Erma dedicated her life to the care and wellbeing of Mary Kate. Erma made sure that Mary Kate attended all the country music concerts that were close by and that they were at all the Clemson home
football and basketball games. Erma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clemson.

Erma is survived by her daughter, Mary Kate Parks, of the home, a sister Mary Carolyn Harden of Ormond Beach FL, a brother, B. Amrey Harden of Watkinsville, Georgia, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary Kate and the Family deeply appreciates the staff of Clemson Downs Healthcare and Nurse Sara of Providence Care for their care and concern of her mother. Special words of thanks and appreciation are extended to Sonia Davis and all of Mary Kate's caregivers who did so much for Erma.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Tribble Center Special Needs Foundation, 116 South Cove Road, Seneca, SC 29672 or to the First Baptist Church of Clemson, 397 College Avenue, Clemson, SC 29631.

Mary Kate - you were an absolute joy to your mom and dad. They were so proud of you! I loved the time we had together at Liberty High School developing augmentative communication for you. You were a champ - a quit and avid learner. You will miss your dear parents. Sending prayers and a big hug to you.

Sending condolences and prayers to my dear cousin Mary Kate on the loss of her Mom and my precious Aunt. I share all of the same lovely memories that were expressed by my sister, Lynne. Erma was truly a special person and we were so lucky to have her as family. I will add one of my memories, which just happens to be about her very first car. It was a 1961 VW Beetle and my sisters and I were so enamored with it! We called it the Bitty car as it seemed so much smaller than our family sedan. She let us crawl all over it and play inside it and beep the horn when it was parked in our grandparents' driveway. She kept that car basically forever, even though she had to drive a more practical Mom car when Mary Kate came along. I also own a VW Beetle and I remember calling my aunt to tell her that I now drive a Bitty Car!

I am grieving the loss of my wonderful Aunt Erma. She was a sweet, loving and fun person. I will always remember her arranging sleep over parties for Mary Kate and us when my sisters and I would visit from Maryland. She invited the girls in the neighborhood, too! We had a blast! I loved her food especially the desserts she made! We loved when Erma would tell stories of things when we we young or when Mary Kate was young. Like when Rhoda took Mary Kate on a walk around our neighborhood and the stroller collapsed on Mary Kate! She had us all laughing when she told it. I will miss her so much. My family and I send our deepest condolences to Mary Kate. We loved our beautiful Aunt Erma Jean.

Erma was a friend from High School at Watkinsville, GA. Leonard was a friend from his days at Southern Piedmont Experiment Station. For several years, Mary Kate and I have been email pals. A great family! May God Bless and comfort Mary Kate and the family.

Erma and Leonard were tax clients of mine for years. They were devoted to each other and Mary Kate.
I remember Erma as a loving wife and mother. She was gracious, kind and gentle...a true southern beauty.
